You can enter your own Points of Interest (POIs) in the system. However most of the units already have POIs, airports, display restaurants and accident-prone areas entered in them.

The navigation system has all the maps downloaded in it which you require for your journey. In case there are no maps like in some low-end systems, you can buy the maps of the region and download them on the system. The maps which you download can be stored on DVDs or CDs. They can also be stored on SD cards (memory card).By downloading maps of your choice you have the advantage of  keeping only those maps which you require rather then having a large number of maps without use.

A navigation system can either be a fixed system or a portable system. A fixed system can be installed in your car, and will remain there. It cannot be moved. There's also a portable navigation system. This is useful when you have to change cars. You should therefore choose the one which meets your requirements.
