GPS technology is becoming popular all over the world. It is commonly being used in automobiles. However there are certain skills on which you need to have command before you buy the actual set.

Entering waypoint: It can become very tough and tiring in case you have to enter waypoints manually. You should use a complete keyboard instead. You can also copy paste the waypoints from websites and then upload them. The waypoints which you record on your journey can be downloaded or extracted. You can also have them printed on maps. However for this, you require GPS specific software.

Finding out your position: You need to learn to determine your position and for this you need to be good at map reading. The reading will become more specific in case the map is detailed. The GPS handset is provided with an internal map and you can use it for determining your position. You can also use an external map by recording waypoints. Most of the sets have simple maps installed in them. This is because of the limited memory. You need to have GPS specific software in case you want to download detailed maps. Your system should also have enough memory for such maps!

Garmin's Map Source provides you with functional maps which are not detailed. A map software known as TOPO (by National Geographic) offers outstanding topographic maps. The bad news is that these maps cannot be downloaded into your unit. This is because the GPS unit cannot work with third party maps. However you can still have them on your unit! You need to use the Garmin software for this. The recordings made in the field are downloaded using this software. These recordings are then transferred to the National Geographic's software. A detailed map is thus produced. TOPO CDs are offered by National Geographic. They are available according to states. You can thus buy the one which you actually require. TOPO thus becomes quite affordable. Some other packages for the road maps like DeLorme are also available.

Navigating skills: These skills are important. Remember that you cannot use your GPS unit in the same way as a traditional compass. GPS will help you only when you keep on moving. You should choose you destination waypoint before you start your journey. The unit will thus know the direction in which it needs to move. The navigation feature of the system will get activated once you start moving.

Other than location, the unit can give detailed information about the distance you have traveled traveled, your speed and altitude. It can also tell you about the track which you undertook.
